With the help of the Erasmus+ funding through New College Lanarkshire a squad of 22 Scotland based players were selected to attend a two-week development camp in the city of Valladolid in Spain. The youngsters were hosted by partners & friends the VRAC Rugby Club (Valladolid Rugby Asociación Club).
This was the youngest squad that Scottish Rugby has selected in ten years of the partnership, following on from the Scotland under-16 Development Programme. The Programme aims to provide additional tactical, technical and physical development opportunities within a ‘High Performance Rugby Environment’ and to educate and develop priority high performance behaviours.
From a pure outcome focus four players showed enough potential to move into the Scotland under-18 Squad with the Captain coming from this group. Another 17 players moved seamlessly from this programme into the Scotland under-17 Development Squad. In addition, after reviewing performances seven players were inducted into Scottish Rugby’s BT Sport Academy for season 2016-17.
Based on the success of this program Scottish Rugby will once again select from this age group, and sees this link as fundamental in this age group of players learnings. The programme also operates as a source of formal and informal CPD for coaches.
Scottish Rugby’s Head of Academy and Performance Programmes, Stephen Gemmell, said: ‘We are delighted that through our continued partnership with Erasmus +, New College Lanarkshire and Valladolid Rugby Asociación Club in Spain we are once again able to take a group of players away for the two-week development camp.
The focus of this camp is to allow players to be exposed to a performance environment and behaviours, whilst experiencing a new culture which will develop them on and off the field.
